Ontario’s arms-length science advisory table says it had no direct input into the selection of COVID-19 hot spots across the province, something suggested by provincial officials this week.
“We shared our scientific argument with the government, but we understand that the government itself decided which neighbourhoods to actually prioritize,” said Robert Steiner, communications director with the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table.

Sources have told this newspaper that members of the science table have been frustrated by the implication from the government that it played a key role in selecting the list of hot spots or made recommendations.

How did a Kanata-area postal code with lower than average rates of COVID get designated a provincial hot spot? That is a question many people are asking.
“I don’t know why it is on the list,” said Glen Gower, city councillor for Stittsville, which includes a portion of the K2V postal code.

The forward sortation area K2V (the first three digits of a postal code) was among a list of hot spots released by the Ontario government last week. The province said the list represented areas that had been disproportionally affected by the pandemic.

Politics did not play a role in the designation of a Kanata-area neighbourhood as a provincial COVID-19 hot spot, Health Minister Christine Elliott said Tuesday.
“There was absolutely no political motivation, whatsoever,” Elliott said in response to a question during a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

The area with the postal code K2V, which is in Long-Term Care Minister Merrilee Fullerton’s riding, has been the focus of questions about why it was designated one of 113 COVID-19 hot spots across the province and one of just three in Ottawa.
