New Mexico CYFD and CASA to celebrate Day of the Hero Volunteers could serve foster children in tri-county area DEMING – A special event will take place on Friday that may impact children in the tri-county area of New Mexico’s southwestern boot heel. New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Division has joined up with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) to honor the “Day of the Hero,” a live virtual event on Facebook in hopes of finding volunteer support for foster children. “We are using Day of the Hero to encourage the public to join us on Facebook and spend a day of fun interactive activities with a chance to win gift cards and prizes,” said Kathy Melendez, CYFD Southwest Regional Navigator. “It also gives us a chance to educate the public on CYFD and CASA initiatives involving foster children and possibly recruit volunteers needed in our area.”

Arkansas Valley CASA receives $1,000 donation from the City of La Junta

LA Junta Tribune La Junta City Council voted unanimously its Monday meeting to issue a one-time donation of $1,000 to the Arkansas Valley Court Appointed Special Advocate organization, which is a nonprofit in the valley that serves abused and neglected children. Cynthia Sollenbarger of Arkansas Valley CASA attended the council meeting to request a donation as part of a round of fundraising she is participating in for the organization. Sollenbarger said that despite a very challenging year due to limitations imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 has been the valley court-appointed advocate group s most successful year since its start in 2017. In 2020, Arkansas Valley CASA served 43 children. The group had to turn away 35 others, but 2020 marked the first year that the organization served more children than it had to turn down.

Roberts was a Wood River Police Cadet for a short time before working at Amoco, Shell and ConocoPhillips where she was an Operator/Offsites Supervisor before her retirement. At Shell, she was on the Shell Recreation Association board and was was responsible for the annual Easter Egg Hunt. She also started and coordinated the Adopt-the-Highway with the Refinery and Hartford. She served on the Emergency Response Team at the refinery in several roles, including Incident Commander and a member on the Fire Crew, Rescue, Hazmat, Medical and CISM Teams..
