The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has forced the Organisers of the Gaborone International Meet (GIM) to indefinitely postpone the event.
Speaking in an interview, GIM head of publicity Calistus Kolantsho said uncertainty caused by the pandemic forced the organisers into a rethink.
“The event was scheduled for the 24
th of April. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, we could not be sure whether it was now feasible,” he said.
Kolantsho said with a surge in infections and uncertainty as to when they would subside, the organisers felt it would be folly to stick to the date.
Another major consideration which forced organisers into a rethink was the issue surrounding closure of international borders.
The instruction was relayed during an impromptu virtual general meeting with all sporting codes this past Thursday.
According to those who attended the meeting, sporting codes were informed that the economy had taken a knock, thus affecting the government funding.
The affiliates were however informed that the order to stop funding activities would not affect those sporting activities described as ‘necessary.’
“We were informed that only national teams whose participation in competitions has been confirmed will be allowed to go ahead with activities,” a source said.
“Even for them to be considered, there should be evidence that there will be financial repercussions if they do not compete,” the source continued.
th of April this year, the Botswana Netball Association (BoNA) will head for its elective General Meeting.
For the current BoNA executive committee led by Malebo Raditladi, the elective AGM will mark a culmination of a very difficult tenure at the helm.
As she and probably many of her current committee members contemplate whether to stand or not for re-election, the events of their tumultuous tenure at the helm will obviously be weighing heavily in their minds.
“Whether I stand for re-election will be decided by the affiliates,” Raditladi says. “If they want me to continue, I will,” she says.
The boards of the two organisations have since proposed three models for consideration to government.
Sunday Standard Sport is in position of a leaked document that the BNSC/BNOC drafted for consideration my sport ministry.
This is after the Minster of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development (MYSC), Tumiso Rakgare, aggressively spearheaded the initiative to merge the two sports bodies to work together.
The first model they have proposed is “
Total merger”. Under this model, BNSC and BNOC will merge into one organisation, which will be a civil entity. Under this model, the board of the new organisation would be elected by National Sport Associations/Federations.
