The Parrott Foundation is donating $400,000 to the Quinte Humane Society to help the free-standing organization build the first phase of a new animal shelter at its new location on Wallbridge-Loyalist Road.
The society confirmed Tuesday the donation and expressed gratitude for helping fund the proposed new facility.

“It takes heart,”said Donna Endicott, chair of the Quinte Humane Society board, in the announcement. “This special gift from the John M. and Bernice Parrott Foundation is an example of the kind of support needed to turn the worst animal shelter building in the province into a proper home for our animals in need, volunteers, professional staff and to be the pride of our community.”

When seen in hindsight, the view is striking.
Medical and scientific experts in Ontario and elsewhere have described how the coronavirus pandemic, after the arrival of virus variants, seemed almost to involve a different illness entirely. People were infected more quickly; younger people began dying quickly, and in greater numbers; entire households fell ill.

An outbreak of COVID-19 at Belleville General Hospital has been linked to the death of one inpatient and the infections of more people beyond the initial group, The Intelligencer has learned.
Hastings Prince Edward Public Health reported the outbreak on the Quinte 5 medical inpatient unit began April 27.

“Tragically, one individual who already had significant underlying conditions contracted COVID-19 through the outbreak, and passed away,” Susan Rowe, Quinte Health Care’s vice-president of people and strategy, wrote via e-mail.

Belleville council has endorsed a call by Cambridge council in support of Ontario requiring employers to provide workers at least five paid sick days.
Councillors debated at length the issue during their Monday meeting. It stemmed from a resolution by the City of Cambridge asking Premier Doug Ford to take further action on sick days.

An Ontario requirement of five days would give workers at least 10 paid sick days per year, the Cambridge resolution states. The number is still less than the 14-day isolation period for COVID-19.
