HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - When people are having their worst day ever, Steve Bilski is at his best. He s one of the first on the scene to help families whoâve lost their home to fires and other disasters.
âIt s very emotional. It s not the easiest job. Some people donât understand what we go through on a daily basis. But with the team we have here, we all make it work to make people comfortable, Steve said.
âHe takes on several different positions: Heâs our logistics lead; he s our desk lead; heâs my volunteer partner. Heâs also the home fire campaign lead, so you couldnât ask for a better person to serve our community, according to Lisa Mike of the Red Cross.

Retired Navy Submariner Chuck Steenburgh helps Virginia Beach Police solve crimes through the Crime Solvers program, where people submit tips anonymously and can receive cash for the information.
âI do some research from the police databases to provide some advance information to the detectives, he explained.
And while heâs logged 3,500 hours at the first precinct, he doesnât get paid.
âI enjoy it, and I also feel like Iâm contributing, he said.
Local church gives away $10,000 in free gas

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Members of a local church took action to lift the spirits of those in the Portsmouth community by filling their hearts with love and their cars with gas.
Grove Church in Portsmouth blessed hundreds of people and their gas-hungry vehicles by giving away $10,000 worth of gas at the Exxon station on High Street Saturday.
âIt is a gesture of love; it is a gesture of village concept that one makes the other person stronger, and here at Grove Church, it s about meeting the needs of people, said Grove Church Pastor Melvin Marinner.
