The Marshalltown Community School District is monitoring activity on school-issued Chromebooks, whether at home or in the buildings. Some parents have sought restriction of certain programs, such as Google Chat.
Near the beginning of the spring semester, parents of a Miller Middle School seventh grader were notified their daughter was taken to the office for her bag to be searched for a firearm.
The student messaged a friend through Google Chat a communication feature on the school-issued Chromebooks to say she had a gun. Directly after the weapon was mentioned, the student said it was fake and she was joking. A real or fake gun was not found.

Students, parents and guardians in the Marshalltown Community School District and in districts across Iowa will take the Conditions for Learning Survey administered by the Iowa Department of Education.
Parents, guardians and students were recently sent a survey link with questions relating to a range of issues.
Student safety, positive student relationships, school rules and how they are enforced are among the included topics addressed by questions in the survey.
The Conditions for Learning Survey is required by the Iowa Department of Education to be administered by Iowa public schools annually since the signing of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act in 2015, which replaced the No Child Left Behind Act. The survey was designed to help improve student engagement, safety and learning environments in Iowa schools.

After two straight weeks of no new cases of COVID-19 in the Marshalltown Community School District, two were confirmed on Friday, and both are among students.
The district started weekly COVID-19 case reports on Sept. 18, in which seven cases were confirmed.
Since the pandemic began, the highest number of weekly cases reported by the district has been 34, which was in November.
A report on the number of COVID-19 cases within the district is shared weekly on Fridays. Each report shares the total number of new, confirmed cases among students and staff members throughout the district since the time of the previous report.
