cbleck@miningjournal.net MARQUETTE Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Tuesday signed legislation that supports the COVID-19 recovery plan she sent to the Legislature in January. The legislation includes key provisions of her MI COVID Recovery Plan, including a wage increase of $2.25 per hour for direct care workers, $283 million in federal emergency rental assistance to help ensure people can stay in their homes, up to $110 million in federal funding for vaccine administration, and up to $555 million in federal funding for testing and tracing. “I think it’s great news that we’ve been able to get some of the federal funding available to us appropriated, including passing two of my key proposals to provide a wage increase for direct care workers and increased funding to help expand vaccinations for Michiganders who are 50 years old or older,” Whitmer said in a statement. “However, the reality is that there is more work to be done and there are still billions of dollars in federa

State-funded program may lower upfront costs for local home buyers

Sentinel Staff HOLLAND An expanded homeownership program now offered in Michigan to aid homebuyers with their initial down payment is available in Holland. The Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) announced in late February the expansion of its homeownership program by offering residents in select ZIP codes up to $10,000 in down payment assistance. The assistance  called a DPA Loan is available to residents in 49010, 49078, 49417, 49423, 49424, 49428 and 49464 in Ottawa and Allegan counties.  The loan is offered as a second mortgage for a maximum amount of $10,000 toward a down payment and closing costs. The program is a 0 percent, non-amortizing loan meaning the principal amount is due in full upon sale or transfer of the property, rather than monthly payments.

More homes were sold in Bay City during the 2020 pandemic than almost 20 years ago Updated Mar 03, 2021; Facebook Share BAY CITY, MI - Despite the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic hanging over the last year, Bay City saw a trend where more houses were sold in 2020 than in almost two decades. City assessor Wade Slivik gave an overview of Bay City’s annual housing report for 2020 during the March 1, 2021, regular city commission meeting. Home sales were up 4.5% from 2020, with 673 homes being sold in 2020 compared to 641 in 2019, according to the data presented by Slivik. “There were more home sales this year than there has been since 2002, 2003,” he said.
