Midland Health began administering second doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday after distributing initial doses to 2,316 employees and other front-line workers in the last few weeks.
The vaccine is 95 percent effective at protecting recipients from getting sick from the coronavirus after two doses have been administered, according to hospital officials.
“We are thrilled about it,” said Val Sparks, Midland Memorial Hospital’s infection preventionist.
She said 881 Midland Health employees have received an initial dose of the vaccine and the other 1,435 doses were given to hospital workers who are not employees, such as independent practitioners and others on the front lines. TEXAS, USA The first babies of 2021 have already been born at local hospitals
Stella Ann McGahan was born at 12:01 a.m. at MCH to Janel Ann McGahan and John Henry McGahan. Stella is their first child.
At ORMC, Carla Mendez and Shawon Parker welcomed Ava into the world at 4:48 a.m.
Additionally, all three babies are among the first recipients of the 2021 POWER Bags, an initiative meant to encourage new parents to read to their children from birth.
For the first time, all three hospitals and Midland and Odessa are participating in this initiative.
Midland Memorial Hospital has not announced its first baby born at this time.

MIDLAND, Texas Midland Memorial Hospital was recently award the Mission: Lifeline Silver Receiving Quality Achievement Award.
The hospital earned the honor for its improvements with treating heart attacks outlined by the American Heart Association.
“MMH is dedicated to providing optimal care for heart attack patients,” says Tasa Richardson. “We are pleased to be recognized for our dedication and achievements in cardiac care through Mission: Lifeline.”
Over 250,000 people each year suffer for STEMI, which is a specific heart attack that causes a blockage of blood flow to the heart. MMH has learned a way to prevent this from happening as frequently by providing clot-busting medication or mechanically opening the blocked vessel.

The positivity rate for COVID at Midland Health testing sites is on pace to be the highest since August.
Midland Health on its website Wednesday reported that 29.8 percent of the 551 people who have tested this week for COVID-19 tested positive. The highest positivity rate for a week since August took place during the week of Nov. 28 when 28.1 percent of the 1,399 people tested positive.
Last week, 26.2 percent of the 1,173 people tested positive. That positivity rate was the second highest since August.
