Two months ago, the heads of the Memphis Police and Fire Departments were called directors. By June, they will both be called chiefs .
Why did the city change the name of the titles? City officials say the reason is simple so it could be more like everywhere else. Most U.S. cities use the title chief when describing top police and fire officials.
Dan Springer, the city s deputy chief operating officer, said the city is in process of changing the name of MFD Director Gina Sweat s position to the chief of fire services. The city executed a similar switch with incoming MPD Chief C.J. Davis. Davis predecessor Mike Rallings was the director of police services.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - President Joe Bidenâs âGetting America Back on Trackâ tour brought two high-up administration representatives to Memphis.
On Thursday, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh came to the Mid-South to garner support for Bidenâs proposed infrastructure plan, a two-part proposal that would total $3.8 trillion in spending.
The two took a tour of the Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks Job Corps Center in Memphis, which served as a catalyst for discussion at a roundtable that followed their tour, which included leaders from the center, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland, and Congressman Steve Cohen.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The Memphis City Council has confirmed Memphis Mayor Jim Stricklandâs nominee for police chief.
The council confirmed Cerelyn âC.J.â Davis by a vote of 12 to 1.
Davis has made history as the first female to lead the Memphis Police Department. It comes at a time when police departments across the country face new scrutiny about their practices and interactions with community members.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) City councilors in Memphis, Tennessee, have approved the hiring of C.J. Davis, the first woman to lead the city s police department.
The City Council voted Tuesday to appoint Davis as chief of the Memphis Police Department. Davis replaces Michael Rallings, who is retiring. She starts the job on June 14.
A former member of the police department in Atlanta, Davis had served as police chief in Durham, North Carolina, since 2016. Davis was the selection of Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland, who said she stood out due to her leadership experience in Atlanta and Durham.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) says since November, it has increased its presence in Shelby County.
This comes as Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland says he plans to request a strong presence on interstates.
THP Col. Matt Perry says there are currently 53 state troopers in the Memphis district that is made up of 10 counties, including Shelby County. Perry says in November, THP created Operation Guardian Angel to bring more troopers to Shelby County on a weekly basis.
