Abolition Row Park, New Bedford: Work begins after 3-year delay

NEW BEDFORD The sign on the corner of Spring and Seventh streets declaring that Abolition Row Park was “Coming Soon” is finally living up to its name as work crews showed up this week and began construction.  “It’s exciting in many ways,” said Lee Blake of the New Bedford Historical Society. “In three months we’ll have a lovely little park there.”  “Abolition Row Park will be a tribute to New Bedford’s history as a major stop on the Underground Railroad, the first free home of Frederick Douglass, and a beacon of tolerance and safety for those seeking freedom,” said Mayor Jon Mitchell in a statement.

Turgeon suggested the numbers were either inflated to support Cordeiro s budget request or deflated later on for public relations purposes. This seemed to happen over a period of several years, according to Turgeon s research.
