80-year-old Benson woman struck, killed on Jonesboro Road while checking mail, troopers say

BENSON, N.C. (WTVD) Officials with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said an 80-year-old woman died after she was hit by an SUV in Benson. Troopers said it happened around 5:20 p.m. on Jonesboro Road when Fleta Wood, 80, was struck by the driver of a Jeep Cherokee as she was crossing the road to check her mail. Wood was pronounced dead at the scene. The car was traveling between 40 and 45 mph at the time of the collision. Contributing factors included darkness and inclement weather, troopers said. No charges will be filed as the victim walked into the road and path of the car.

(WBTV) - A commander with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol wants his troopers to write more speeding tickets. In an email sent at the start of the year, Cpt. Neil Denman emailed troopers he oversees in Troop G to write more speeding tickets. Troop G is headquartered in Asheville and covers most of western North Carolina, from Rutherford County to Avery County to Cherokee County.

Woman, grandson encounter wanted suspect on front porch     DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. (WXII) A woman and her grandson encountered a wanted suspect on their front porch Thursday morning in Asheboro. Davidson County authorities are assisting Randolph County deputies in looking for the suspect who is accused of assault and leading a chase on Wednesday. Reports said deputies responded at about 4:50 p.m. Wednesday to an assault call on Cabin Creek Road near Denton. Deputies said the suspect, identified as Dustin Diehl, fled the scene in a car which they pursued. The pursuit continued into Randolph County, where Diehl crashed near Gopher Woods Road and Old Highway 49.

January 18, 2021 Campbell Law alumnus Judge Jeffery K. Carpenter ’03 and current LL.M. student Judge April C. Wood were among the five judges  formally installed in a virtual ceremony in the courtroom of the North Carolina Court of Appeals on Jan. 14, 2021.  Chief Judge Donna Stroud ’88 administered the oath of office. The swearing-in ceremony was virtual due to COVID-19 precautions. Guests, media, and the public attended the ceremony virtually via Livestream that can be watched at this link. Carpenter joined the Court of Appeals after serving as a superior court judge. He grew up just outside of the town of Morven in Anson County, North Carolina, where he attended and graduated from Anson County Public Schools. Carpenter attended Wingate University before transferring to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he earned a bachelor of arts in political science. Shortly after graduating, he attended and graduated from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol
