Minimum wage amendment bill: NLC threatens indefinite strike

Daily Post Nigeria Published The President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, has disclosed that the organized labour will embark on an indefinite strike if the bill to change the law on minimum wage is allowed to pass. The bill sponsored by Garba Datti, which has scaled second reading in the House of Representatives has been referred to the House Committee on constitutional amendment. The bill seeks to move the minimum wage from the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent legislative list. The implication is that the state governments will determine the minimum wage. “Those sponsoring this bill are the ones instigating crisis. NLC is against this bill. Whatever incentive that has been brought, they should change their minds and stand with the people.

Labour Pickets National Assembly

By Onyebuchi Ezigbo Organised labour has made good its threat to picket the National Assembly as part of its nationwide protest against the proposed amendment seeking to move the issue of minimum wage from the Exclusive list to Concurrent list. As early as 7.30 am Wednesday, members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) gathered at the Unity Fountain in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FEC) from where they later marched to the junction linking the Three Arms Zone. The protest caused gridlock as motorists trying to get to the Aso Villa, Federal Secretariat, the National Assembly, and the Supreme Court could not access the road.
