For years, Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome fought in public, and then in court, against the creation of the new city of St. George, arguing the move would divide

Gov. Jeff Landry announced his appointments to the city of St. Georges board of aldermen Thursday, including a former East Baton Rouge Parish Metro Council member.

Five people have been selected to serve as the first city council for the City of St. George.

Gov. Jeff Landry selected the city of St. George’s interim mayor and police chief on Tuesday, marking the first leaders of East Baton Rouge Parish’s newest city.

With St. George organizers getting the green light from the Louisiana Supreme Court to create a new city, the 19th Judicial District Court may now decide if businesses and residents

The creation of St George was given the green light by the state Supreme Court last week, ending a hostile and divisive ten-year campaign.

 

The NAACP expressed concern about school funding after the court decision. Some citizens in Louisiana are forming a new city in what opponents claim is racist movement.

As St. George moves towards becoming its own city, leaders are demanding the City-Parish pay back the taxes St. George residents paid to East Baton Rouge Parish government.  Parish officials are adamant thats not going to happen.
