Now that the sports season is winding down for the Gator programs, we’re going to switch gears. The Back Nine will continue Mondays, but we’ll let the Front Nine take the summer off. Instead, we will help you get through the hot months of June, July and August in anticipation of football season with the “Friday Fivesome”, which will be five things about college football that Pat Dooley thinks he thinks. Let’s start and we hope you enjoy the buildup to the 2021 season. 1. I have though...

The Back Nine comes at you after a perfect day for The 26th Bob Dooley Invitational and a nice day for baseball that followed except for the lack of clutch hitting. Sorry there was no Front Nine last week, but the tournament kind of took precedent. 10. I feel like I just won an Oscar because there are so many people to thank and I know I’ll forget some. Over the past few years I have studied the month of May and decided that weather-wise it seemed like the perfect month for our tournament. An...

Diane Warren (Songwriter, Producer), and Ben Silverman (Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer of Propagate Content) are among nearly 130 signers of the joint statement, which was made public Friday. "We are deeply concerned by the escalating violence in Israel and the Palestinian Territories," the statement reads. "The loss of life and violence is heartbreaking. We call on the leaders of all parties to end the violence, urge calm, and work toward de-escalation." The statements signers are a...

Ollie Ollie Oxen Free? Jason DeVore: They should expect a lot of intensity. We had a lot of time to write the album, obviously, because we had a year off of touring and everything else of that nature, so we ended up writing like 40 songs for it. In the end, we chose to have just 13 really fun songs, and we recorded once again with Cameron Webb (Motörhead, Sum 41, Kelly Clarkson, Megadeth) out in California. We previously did The Tipping Point (2013) with him, so we knew that it would sound gr...

The Back Nine comes at you after a big weekend for Gator sports and a great Sunday for all of the mothers out there, especially my wife. 10. There is no way I can start this column without gushing about what happened on the softball field Sunday. If it wasn’t enough that Julia Cottrill hit the walk-off homer that gave Florida the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament and a share of the SEC title, her incredible slide tied the game up earlier on the day. And then she had a tooth chipped out by cele...

The Back Nine comes at you after another weekend on the road and some and, yes, I feel pampered. And poor. Now it’s time to pour myself into the 26th Bob Dooley Invitational (May 15). 10. So, the NFL Draft finally is over and the SEC once again flexed its muscles setting a record for the most players ever drafted. And it’s not as if we went to 10 rounds like the old days that anyone would catch up. The SEC is America’s League and everyone else is living in it. It’s where the most elite ...

“Ollie Ollie Oxen Free” is a song that shoots at you faster than a missile. Its got a catchy harmonized chorus, and a sense of hope in the lyrics: Just hold on and be strong, you belong in good company. One listen to “Fire Off Another,” and you cant help but think about the concept of conflict (not to mention, the visuals for the music video include soldiers in a tank and fighter pilots). The lyrics hint at a disagreement: "Im right, youre wrong / We can do this all day long." You might...

The Back Nine comes at you in a bit of a panic because it is only three weeks until the 26thBob Dooley Invitational and I’m starting to freak out. This is, of course, an annual occurrence. 1. Because we live in football town (and remind me to tell you about the shirt I once bought in Athens), we’ll start with the news that the SEC Network is going to show the two-hour Inside the Gators special Monday at 9 p.m. This is a replacement for having a spring game, which couldn’t be played becaus...
