PM Narendra Modi most-watched personality on Indian TV in 2020: BARC report
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the most-watched personality on television in India last year, according to the annual TV viewership report for 2019-2020 by Broadcast Audio Research Council (BARC). PM Modi's public addresses regarding the ongoing Covid pandemic, and his also his speeches focussing on a range of issues -- from India being at the forefront of exporting Covid-19 vaccines to the ongoing farmer protests.
Broadly, here are the top three trends that one can spot in the report:

"Whether they are his interviews, speeches at global events, addresses to the nation or even a wildlife adventure show, channels that broadcast the content see their viewership leapfrog and set new levels," the report stated, explaining the impact PM Modi had.

TV viewership surged 18 percent during peak lockdown and overall was 9 percent higher in 2020 compared to the year before.

TV news channels benefited from the coronavirus lockdown, growing their viewership from 7.6 percent to 14.6 percent of viewership, according to the Broadcast Audience Research Councilâs annual report.

Overall, TV viewership surged 18 percent during peak lockdown, and was 9 percent higher in 2020 compared to 2019, as per the BARC report. General entertainment channels also saw a rise with viewership, growing by 9 percent. Children watching more television as they were forced to remain at home while schools remained shut could be a factor adding to the growth in the viewership of entertainment channels.
As BARC releases its TRP rating list of week 6, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai once again secured a place in top 5 while other shows witnessed a rise in impressions.
