TRENTON - A project a quarter of a century in the making at Acadia national park has begun its final stage as of Monday afternoon.

The project has been nearly two decades in the making, and it's part of a broad plan to expand bus service, remove cars from the road and ease traffic in and around Acadia National Park.

The Rumford-Mexico Bridge replacement project on Route 2 will begin with a temporary bridge that will close a baseball field in Three Fields.

The $400 million allocated for transportation projects would help unlock an estimated $1 billion in federal infrastructure spending, state officials say.

The Maine Department of Transportation began advertising the Frank J. Wood Bridge replacement project for construction bids Wednesday, after the Federal Highway Administration again agreed that rehabilitating the 90-year-old structure would be infeasible due to high costs.  

In 2017, the estimated cost to replace the bridge was around $13 million. Due to the delay, the new bridge is estimated to cost multiple times more.

Projects to be tackled included closing a gap in the Eastern Trail and replacing an aging ferry to Isleboro with a new hybrid-electric one.
