The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the severe cyclonic storm ‘Mocha is set to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm today. It would head to the Bangladesh-Myanmar coast, the weather department said.

After days of restless anticipation and anxious weather tracking, the system brewing in the Bay of Bengal finally intensified into Cyclone Mocha this morning,

Mocha is likely to make landfall along Bangladesh-Myanmar border near to Sittwe on May 14, 2023 as a very severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 150-160 kmph gusting to 175 kmph, IMD said

Moderate to light rain and thundershowers will stay across all the 5 subdivisions of northeast monsoon between 19th and 23rd Dec. Northeasterlies stream appear to be flattening thereafter and the weather conditions are expected to improve around Christmas.

The depression will power the monsoon stream afresh and revive the weather activity from East Coast to West Coast and taking it further inland to plains of North India. Heavy to very heavy rains accompanied with weather hazards like lightning, thunderstorm, gale winds are expected in a staggered manner along the track of the system.

Heavy to very heavy rains accompanied with strong winds of 60 -80kmh and gusting to 90kmh are likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Locations like Machilipatnam, Narsapur, Kakinada, Tuni and Vizag will be at risk of prolonged inclement weather conditions.

A low pressure area is likely to form over South Andaman Sea and adjoining southern parts of Central BoB in the next about 36hours. As a precursor, cyclonic circulation has appeared over that area and is expected to consolidate further.
