Amid the land subsidence continuing in the Joshimath area of the Chamoli district in Uttarakhand, the Prime Ministers office on Sunday said it would hold a high-level meeting this afternoon.

Joshimath has been declared a landslide-subsidence zone and over 60 families living in uninhabitable houses in the sinking town have been evacuated to temporary relief centres, a senior official said on Sunday.

The situation worsened, and now over 600 families are being evacuated from Joshimath after a temple collapsed, and several houses developed wide cracks.

Joshimath Sinking Latest News: Cracks have appeared in hundreds of houses of Joshimath, the gateway to some renowned pilgrimage sites like Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib. 

Land subsidence in Joshimath is primarily due to the National Thermal Power Corporation’s Tapovan Vishnugad Hydro Power Project and is a very grave reminder that people are messing up with the environment to an extent that is irreversible, experts said on Sunday.

The situation in Joshimath remains grim as Shankaracharya Matth located in the areahas also developed cracks in many places.
