Joshimath has been declared a landslide-subsidence zone and over 60 families living in damaged houses in the sinking town have been evacuated to temporary relief centres, a senior official said on Sunday.

With the land subsidence continuing at Joshimath town of Uttarakhand, the district administration has made arrangements for the affected families.

Land subsidence in Joshimath is primarily due to the National Thermal Power Corporation's Tapovan Vishnugad Hydro Power Project and is a very grave reminder that people are messing up with the environment to an extent that is irreversible.

The appearance of cracks on roads and houses across Joshimath in Uttarakhand is mainly due to the rampant infrastructure development that is happening in a very fragile ecosystem like Himalayas, experts said on Sunday, adding climate change is a force multiplier.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been moved in Delhi High Court seeking direction to the Centre to constitute a high power joint committee in the chairmanship of retired Justice of the High Court and representative of all relevant ministries to look into this immediately for the affected areas of Joshimath, Uttarakhand, who work for the rehabilitation of people.

More than 60 families living in uninhabitable houses have been evacuated to temporary relief centres. CM Pushkar, who visited the affected areas in Joshimath on Saturday, held a meeting with officials here after returning and asked them to relax norms to expedite relief operations.
