New Brunswick's Farm Practices Review Board ruled this week that Coastal Shell Products doesn't qualify as an agricultural operation, which means a citizens' group can resume its application for a court injunction to shut down the Richibucto-based shell-processing plant.

A group of Richibucto residents have lost their latest move to try and stop what they say is an unbearable smell coming from a shell processing plant.

Dozens of people from the Richibucto, N.B., area travelled by bus and car to the Moncton Law Courts Friday morning for a hearing of the motion of the injunction against the Coastal Shell Products facility.

About 50 residents of Beaurivage, N.B. attended the hearing for a temporary injunction to shut down the Coastal Shell drying facility for the duration of ongoing lawsuits.

The plant has caused an uproar from residents because of the foul odour it creates throughout the community when it operates at night.

A processing plant in eastern New Brunswick has had its operating licence renewed, with the condition that it install odour control technology within a year.

With Coastal Shell Products' approval to operate up for renewal at the end of July, many residents of Richibucto wonder what it will take to shut down the shellfish plant that's been stinking up their town for years. 

A group of Richibucto residents are fed up with the smell produced from the shell-drying plant and have been calling on the municipality and the province to shut it down.
