Despite available funds and property, zoning regulations have stalled progress on a proposed pallet shelter project in Burien, and could kill it altogether.

Burien City Council's recent decision on zoning regulations has sparked controversy over the fate of a proposed tiny home project to help the homeless.

On a day marked by protests, non-profits and homeless advocates gathered outside Burien City Hall for a silent vigil, honoring nearly two dozen unhoused individuals who lost their lives while being without shelter since 2017.

Residents, business owners and unhoused people in Burien have mixed reactions on the city's ongoing response to the homelessness crisis.

Unhoused residents packed their bags and camped outside Burien's City Hall after "Sunnydale Village" shut its doors on Monday. The sanctioned encampment, located in the parking lot of Oasis Home Church, was forced to disband as it was only allowed to stay on church property for 90 days.

A month after it started enforcing its public camping ban, the city of Burien is now facing a lawsuit. It was filed in King County Superior Court on Wednesday by the Northwest Justice Project on behalf of three unhoused Burien residents and the Seattle King County Coalition on Homelessness.

A temporary sanctioned encampment for the unhoused is opening up to help relieve Burien of the ongoing problem.
