The Jefferson City track and field teams return 11 state qualifiers from last year’s boys and girls team and are looking to take another leap this year. The Jays and Lady Jays will take that first step at 4 p.m. today when they open the season in a triangular with Helias and Rolla at Adkins Stadium.

Eight medals and two runner-up finishes concluded the final day of the Class 4 track and field state championships at Adkins Stadium for the Jefferson City Jays and Lady Jays. It was an impressive day from the young Lady Jays on Saturday.

Tommy Roehl picked up all-state honors to lead the Jefferson City track and field team on Day 1 of the Class 4 state track and field championships at Adkins Stadium. In addition, two Jefferson City individuals and three relay teams advanced out of their preliminaries to today’s finals.

The Jefferson City Jays had a chance to take the lead in the final seconds against the defending state champion and current No. 7 team in Class 6 Kickapoo Chiefs, but a floater from freshman guard Exavier Wilson bounced off the back of the rim and allowed the Chiefs to run the clock out for a 48-47 victory Friday night on Senior Night at Fleming Fieldhouse.
