Diepsloot crime-fighter John Makola left his family at home on Monday night last week after he received a frantic call from a shop owner who heard people banging on his door, shortly after locking up.

At least 20 people were killed in Diepsloot, northern Johannesburg, in the first three months of the year (January to March), making it one of the most dangerous places to live in Gauteng.

Disgruntled residents of Diepsloot have vowed to continue barricading the roads until their grievances are addressed by the President.

Over the past two days, residents have protested over inadequate policing and rampant crime in the area and now hope that Wednesdays march to the Union Buildings will result in presidential intervention.

'Mr President, your people are dying. We are crying to you. Please have mercy and come to Diepsloot.'

Residents said they live in perpetual fear owing to high crime levels in the area and blame the escalating crime rate on poor police visibility and an influx of undocumented foreign nationals.

He was rushed to the hospital and succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, 18 June.

Gauteng police have heightened visibility in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg, following violent protests in the area on Tuesday.
