At least 20 people were killed in Diepsloot, northern Johannesburg, in the first three months of the year (January to March), making it one of the most dangerous places to live in Gauteng.

Diepsloot crime-fighter John Makola left his family at home on Monday night last week after he received a frantic call from a shop owner who heard people banging on his door, shortly after locking up.

Diepsloot residents say they have had enough, as crime rates rise in the community.

A small delegation of Diepsloot community leaders has been denied entry into the Union Buildings as they hope to meet with senior representatives in the office of the Presidency. They want government intervention over the crime levels in the area.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela says while there are challenges with policing in Diepsloot, he believes residents are still willing to work with the police to fight crime.

The delegation on Wednesday took the communitys frustrations over high levels of crime to the presidents office. Earlier on Wednesday, security personnel refused the delegation entry into the Union Buildings.

They have been calling for President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene in addressing the issues plaguing the area amid escalating crime levels.

Despite presence of SAPS and JMPD the area continues to grapple with a high crime rate

Gauteng police boss Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela said the deployment of 13 trained drone pilots would bring positive results.
