Trouble tends to arise this time of year in B.C. when painted turtles migrate across roads on their way to breeding grounds mapped out in their DNA, and get run over.

While dozens of new wildfires sprung up across Alberta on Thursday, there was some good news on the fire front in parts of the Wood Buffalo region.

As families rush to save their homes from flooding, residents from Parker Cove, B.C., who are not impacted, and others from further away, are pitching in to help with sandbagging.

Flood watches have been issued in B.C., from the Okanagan to the Alberta border, and local regional districts are readying for potential flooding.

Environment Canada said conditions are favourable Wednesday evening for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail.

From Comox to Squamish to Yoho National Park, eight areas in B.C. set new daily high temperatures as a ridge of high pressure brought the province more sunshine on Tuesday.  

The BC River Forecast Centre put the Southern Interior on flood watch Tuesday as sunny conditions, warm temperatures and high freezing levels lead to increased water levels.

Alberta is once again in drought conditions, with the hot dry weather prompting fire bans, advisories and restrictions across Alberta.

A strong upper ridge will build across B.C. on Thursday and into the weekend. As a result, snowmelt rates for mid-level snowpacks are expected to rise sharply.

“Chilly and unsettled” conditions are expected for southern Ontario though next week. But there is some hope for a possible return of summer-like weather relatively soon.
