A heat wave that has sent temperatures soaring in parts of Western Canada should be seen as a warning to prepare for hot spells outside the summer months, researchers say.

Lytton and Chilliwack both posted the hottest temperature in Canada for May 14, at 35.9 C. Lytton’s previous temperature record for the day of 33.9 C was set 50 years ago.

Global News meteorologist Anthony Farnell said in parts of southern Ontario, the smoke is thick enough “to almost completely block out the sun.”
