The United States has less press freedom than 54 countries. Or does it?

Estonia has dropped from forth to eights place in the 2023 World Press Freedom Index, among the 180 countries evaluated by Reporters without Borders (RSF). Norway tops the list in 2023 as having the most freedoms for press, followed by Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania and Estonia. The bottom of the list is made up by North Korea, China, Vietnam and Iran. Canada is in 15th place, USA in 45th and Russia in 164th place.

Friday's cyber attack on Estonia's main private media houses was part of a long-running, consistent wave of such incidents, IT and foreign trade minister Kristjan Järvan (Isamaa) said late last week.

Estonia ranks fourth in the 2022 World Press Freedom Index, compiled by Reporters Without Borders and assessing the state of journalism in 180 countries and territories – rising from last year’s 15th position.

In just one year, Estonia has climbed nine spots from 15th to 4th in the 2022 World Press Freedom Index rankings published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on Tuesday.
