The Eugene Eagles nearly erased a 10-point deficit with less than three minutes to play Tuesday night, but a 35-foot heave at the buzzer was off the mark as the Hartville Eagles held on for a 61-58 win in the Class 2 state sectional round.

Five area teams will be among the 48 boys basketball teams opening the Class 1-3 state tournaments across Missouri. The St. Elizabeth Hornets, the Fatima Comets, the Eugene Eagles, the Versailles Tigers and the Tipton Cardinals each have a chance to move one step closer to the Final Four — which will be played next week at Mizzou Arena — beginning with tonight’s sectional round.

California Pintos basketball faced one of their greatest opponents of the regular season Thursday night against the Eugene Eagles. The Eagles had won 18 of their first 21 games and were undefeated on their home court, but the Pintos entered the game with a season-high, six-game winning streak after defeating Fulton 56-43 two days earlier.

Craig Engelbrecht reached another milestone win in his coaching career, and it came on a familiar floor. Engelbrecht won his 600th career game as a head coach Tuesday, as the top-seeded School of the Osage Indians picked up a 71-41 victory against the Belle Tigers in the first round of the Eugene Tournament. Engelbrecht, who is in his third season coaching the Indians, was a longtime coach with the Eugene Eagles.
