NASA has launched an experimental airplane, a precursor to a new generation of commercial aircraft that can travel faster than the speed of sound. Using the X-59 quiet supersonic aircraft, built by Lockheed Martin, NASA aims to gather data that could revolutionize air travel.

Created along with Lockheed Martin, a new aircraft is designed to reduce the sonic boom created by traveling faster than the speed of sound to a sonic thump.

NASA and Lockheed Martin have debuted the X-59 quiet supersonic aircraft, which aims to enable commercial supersonic flight over land by generating a quieter sonic thump. The X-59 is part of NASAs Quesst mission to provide data for regulators to reconsider supersonic flight rules. The aircraft is designed to fly at 1.4 times the speed of sound and will undergo flight tests before being transferred to NASAs Armstrong Flight Research Center.
