Stewart Reuben has officiated and/or organised several top-level chess events held in Great Britain and other countries, including the World Chess Championship, the British Chess Championship and a number of Hastings Congresses. The Netherlands hosted Eurochess, a now traditional bankers’ tournament, and offered the guests from Europe a nice visiting programme. The host team from De Nederlandsche Bank (the Netherlands’ central bank) won the team competition, while Razvan-Alexandru Sebe-Vodislav finished first in the individual standings. From 22 to 26 September, Ilya Levitov is organising a “Chess Week” for the second time. Ten strong players will compete in a double-round rapid chess tournament, including two former world champions, Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik. 1993 was a particularly memorable year in chess history. Short and Kasparov had decided to leave FIDE and organise their World Championship match on their own, and FIDE, with its then President Campomanes, then organised an alternative World Championship match with Karpov and Timman. But this was not under a good star. During the opening ceremony pyrotechnics set fire to a banner on the stage.

It's hard to think of a better match in chess between author and subject than GM Jan Timman's new anthology, "Max Euwe's Best Games."
