The FIDE Council awarded the title of Honorary Grandmaster to Andreas Dueckstein (Austria) and Iivo Nei (Estonia) for their consistently strong results in the 1950s-70s. Nei was an 8-time Estonian who tied for first with Paul Keres in Beverwijk (later Hoogovens). A long stay of several weeks in the hospital when he was five years old and a caring doctor who played correspondence chess and explained the chess rules to him gave way to his great passion. Eduard Frey celebrates the legend’s anniversary!

The Max Euwe Centre in Amsterdam is an institution. It offers training courses, houses a huge library with more than 10,000 books and helps to support the wide interest in the cultural, social and academic aspects of chess. After 32 years, the Centre must now leave its location, but will be given new premises on the same street, the Max Euweplein. The move will involve some costs and the Euwe Centre would be happy if chess fans could support it.
