Back in 1985, if you wanted a fresh, piping-hot slice of San Francisco-style pizza, there was only one place you could get it: Clear Lake, Iowa. A small city of about 7,500 people — both now, and back in the '80s — Clear Lake is a popular stop along Interstate 35 and its biggest claim to fame is that it was the last place Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper played before their tragic plane crash on February 3, 1959 (better known as “The Day the Music Died”).

Though California continues to post record numbers of coronavirus deaths, some restaurateurs are demanding they be allowed to reopen. A ban on al fresco meals has many people up in arms, despite infection experts saying that both indoor and outdoor dining is a transmission risk.
The debate, fueled by anger, uncertainty, and economic concerns, comes as California’s healthcare system is overwhelmed. Many hospitals’ ICU capacities have fallen to zero as the state breaks new records every day for new cases and fatalities.
The current coronavirus surge is by far the worst that California has seen – and alarm bells are ringing about how holiday gatherings could make the situation even more serious. Against that backdrop, cities, counties and the state have issued a patchwork of overlapping shutdown regulations.
