The Sports Alley/El Dorado News-Times Scholar Athlete Awards Banquet resumed on May 30 after a five-year hiatus with the previous event held in 2018 after 20 consecutive years. The community turned out in support of the banquet, held at College Avenue Church of Christ.

El Dorado track athlete Kamille Moore will continue her career at Southern Arkansas University. Moore signed with the Lady Muleriders on Thursday.

On his 16th birthday, Riley Dumas got an unusual present.

RUSSELLVILLE - El Dorado won the girls’ 4x100 relay Wednesday at the 5A State Track & Field Championships. The Lady Wildcats finished fourth in the team standings with 48 points behind Lake Hamilton (86), Russellville (79) and Vilonia (61).

El Dorado’s success on the track this season has been a team effort. Going into the 5A South Conference Meet on Tuesday at Lake Hamilton, Coach John Koonce will be looking for some individual performances to spark the squad. Senior Kamille Moore will compete in the long jump and triple jump this week. Koonce hopes she can maintain the high levels she’s produced lately.

In most sports, looking ahead is a bad idea. High school track and field isn’t most sports. El Dorado coach John Koonce has led the Lady Wildcats to back-to-back 5A state championships. This week isn’t the state meet but the state meet is what’s on Koonce’s mind as El Dorado travels to Lake Hamilton on Tuesday for the 5A South Conference Championships. He’s not alone.

El Dorado’s distance runners traveled to Ruston Saturday and competed in the Louisiana Mile Festival. Zachary McMillon finished 13th overall in the boys’ division with a personal best time of 4:34.19 in the 1,600-meter run.

Zyron Brock finished in the top-4 in six individual events at last year’s 5A State Track & Field Championships, including state titles in the 400 and long jump. An injury has hampered her start to the 2024 season. The junior has high hopes for a fast finish as the Lady Wildcats look for a third straight championship.

An unwelcome visitor to a Miami Springs backyard wasn’t able to break into a home, but police said he did manage to pilfer some beer, getting swigs in before his arrest.
