“Life sentences are reserved for the most heinous of crimes," said Deputy Attorney General Brent Kempema.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota man convicted of killing his wife's grandmother after assaulting his wife was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison. Mitch Caffee, 39, of Wessington Springs, was originally charged with two dozen felony counts in the October 2021 incident.

As part of a plea agreement, 23 other felony charges were dismissed by prosecutors.

Caffee's $1 million bond was revoked following an Oct. 26 bond hearing

Though the wife said she didn't believe Caffee would hurt their children, she expressed her nervousness to return home.

Mitch Caffee, 38, was charged with five counts relating to the death.
