“Life sentences are reserved for the most heinous of crimes," said Deputy Attorney General Brent Kempema.

Attorney General Mark Vargo and Jerauld County States Attorney Dedrich Koch announced Wednesday that a Wessington Springs man had been sentenced for a 2021 homicide.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota man convicted of killing his wife's grandmother after assaulting his wife was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison. Mitch Caffee, 39, of Wessington Springs, was originally charged with two dozen felony counts in the October 2021 incident.

As part of a plea agreement, 23 other felony charges were dismissed by prosecutors.

Caffee is currently being held on no bond after allegedly shooting and killing his wife’s grandmother during a confrontation in her home on Oct. 24, 2021. He faces up to life in prison.
