Races for Select Board, school board highlight Westford elections

Absentee ballots are available until noon, May 3. Dubey said, You need to have a reason to request an absentee ballot that you can’t make it to the polls either out of town on election day, a member of the military, residing overseas,  requires assistance due to a physical disability or for religious reasons. There is a drop box for ballots at the back door of Town Hall.

League hosts forum for Westford election hopefuls

Wicked Local WESTFORD The League of Women Voters of Westford is hosting a virtual candidates forum and wants to hear from voters in town with questions. The league s candidates night takes place April 14, 7-9 p.m., according to an announcement on the league s Facebook page.  Questions welcome The league asks residents to send questions by 5 p.m. April 9 to a link on the league s website. Organizers have asked those submitting questions to observe rules: Organizers said residents can call in this year with questions, but encourages questions sent in advance. The league website lists rules, noting that questions will be answered only during the forum.

Westford panel will help select new police chief

Wicked Local WESTFORD The process for naming a new police chief is moving ahead, with the Select Board s appointment of a citizen member to a promotions panel. The Select Board voted to accept Noel Almeida on Feb. 9 among the nine applications for the resident s representative position. Praise for applicants Select Board members praised the nine applicants who came forward, and encouraged them to remain involved in the process.  There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Thank you very much everybody, for showing that interest, Select Board Member Mark Kost said. That s what makes Westford, Westford making the community the best that it can be, said Select Board Chairman Andrea Peraner-Sweet.

WESTFORD The town wants to meet a state goal of reducing carbon emission, but there are differing views on how to go about it.  The Select Board held a joint meeting Dec. 8 with the Energy Committee to discuss the directives of Article 14, approved by voters at fall special Town Meeting. The meeting took place virtually, due to coronavirus restrictions. The board voted unanimously to expand and rename the Energy Committee to reflect its new duties. The board will continue the conversation in January.

Westford board waives liquor license fees for first half of 2021

WESTFORD With many businesses bearing the brunt of the economic crisis, the Select Board has waived all town liquor license fees for the first six months of 2021.  The list includes all alcohol and wine and malt licenses. However, the board noted the town is grappling with fiscal issues of its own as the coronavirus continues to take a toll both on the economy and public health. Businesses struggle The board voted unanimously on the measure at its Dec. 8 meeting, held virtually due to coronavirus restrictions. Payments for the second six months will come due next June.
