The Kremlin on Tuesday dismissed Western demands to release Russia’s most prominent opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, saying calls for mass protests over his arrest were “troubling”.
Legal pressure is ramping up against President Vladimir Putin’s best-known domestic critic, who is due in court on defamation charges on Wednesday, as his allies in Russia call for protests in Moscow this weekend.
Mr. Navalny, 44, was arrested on Sunday as he returned to Russia from Germany for the first time since he recovered from a near-fatal poisoning with the Soviet-designed Novichok nerve agent in August. Russia’s prison service said it had detained Mr. Navalny for violating the terms of a suspended sentence he was given in 2014 on fraud charges, which he says were politically motivated. Da Ra Bendre National Memorial Trust has chosen writer and critic H.S. Shivaprakash for the prestigious Ambikatanayadatta National Award.
Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Chairman of Bendre Memorial Trust D.M. Hiremath announced the decision and said that the award would be conferred on the writer at a function to be held on January 31.
He said that the trust was conducting a series of programmes to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of poet laureate Da Ra Bendre and the award will be presented during the function at Bendre Bhavan in Dharwad.
A three-member committee comprising Gurupad Mareguddi, Shivanand Kelaginamani and Tarini Shubhadayini had recommended Dr. Shivaprakash for the award which carries a purse of ₹ 1 lakh and a citation.

Shortlisted agencies get nod to prepare CRZ, EIA reports
The much-awaited sewage treatment plant (STP) projects of the Kozhikode Corporation at Kothi and Avikkalthodu have got going, with the corporation council giving its nod to the two agencies shortlisted for preparing the CRZ status report as well as the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report.
The two projects which are part of the decentralised sewerage system under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) scheme need clearance from the Kerala Coastal Zone Management Authority (KCZMA) before commencement of work. Hence, proposals were invited from agencies accredited by the Ministry of Environment and Forest to prepare the CRZ status report.
