Mumbai: Lawyer’s wife in MSRTC workers protest case gets court relief

Sadavarte was arrested on Apr 8 and has since been in custody. His advocate Girish Kulkarni had sought bail for him on the grounds that at a meeting the previous day of protest, Sadavarte had asked workers to gather on Apr 12 and so he cannot be held responsible for the protest that took place on Apr 8, for which he was booked.

On Apr 7, the HC had extended the deadline for striking workers of the MSRTC to resume duty by Apr 22, without fear of administrative action.

The police have so far arrested 116 persons, including main accused lawyer Gunaratna Sadavarte, in connection with the agitation staged by striking MSRTC workers at Pawar's residence Silver Oak at Pedder Road here on April 8.

Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil on Tuesday alleged a Nagpur connection to the MSRTC protests outside Sharad Pawar’s residence.

Meanwhile, Sadawarte's wife Jayashree Patil has also been made a wanted accused in the case for allegedly instigating the protest.

A probe is already on into the lapse, while the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) of zone II has been transferred and a senior inspector of the Gamdevi police station suspended, the minister told reporters.

A violent protest took place outside the Silver Oak residence of Pawar on Friday, the MSRTC workers pelted stones and threw chappals and shouted slogans outside the house. The protestors were angry at the leader for ignoring their demand of including the corporation in the state government.

According to the police, the protesters were stopped by security when they tried to enter the premises, which led to the protesters allegedly turning violent and breaking the security barricades.

Chaos prevailed outside NCP chief Sharad Pawar's residence here on Friday afternoon as over a hundred striking workers of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) staged angry protests, accusing the veteran leader of not doing anything to help them.
