fabulist might as well just are telling people he speaker of the house, because kevin sure ain t closing. and that is the reidout and all in with chris hayes starts right now. with chris hayes starts right no good evening from ne, i m chris hayes. it was a truly remarkable scene in washington state see this afternoon, as the house adjourned after what should have been the triumphant first day of the incoming republican majority. instead, it was an unmitigated disaster, with republican leader kevin mccarthy failing three times in succession to be elected speaker. the house will return at noon tomorrow and will continue voting until one candidate, mccarthy or someone else, reaches a majority. this has not happened for a century. the last time the vote for speaker went past a single around with all the way back 100 years ago in 1923. we arrived at this moment after a day full of insanity on capitol hill. it began with the republican house caucus meeting this morning which was
number one vote getter. on the other side, it was solemnity, it was sour, it was disorganized, and there was no future movement that we could see. and it was unhappiness. and when you try to put something together that simply just cannot come together, when you try to get those 20 or you try to get only four to be an opposition to your speakership, and you are unsuccessful, round after round after round, it was complete silence and solemn this solemness on the other side we stayed united. we put those 212 votes on the table. and frankly, i really wanted to offer a motion to change the rules to accept a plurality vote that would elect the speaker of the house.
we were boyant, we sensed the future and we sensed an agenda and we had a focused and we had a future for america. we were going forward. we were doing something new. we had the opportunity with new leadership, which includes, of course, whip clark. it included chair aguilar and vice chair liu and many others many of us serving as selected chief deputy whip. it was a day of refreshing opportunity for democrats. and we came there to govern. but we came there to lead. and at the same time, we knew that we were making an historical moment that was powerful. some 150 years plus since slavery was abolished, here we were electing what might be the next speaker of the house in as much as hakeem jeffries, on all three voting rounds, was the number one vote getter.
