Around 388 infrastructure projects in India, each requiring an investment of Rs 150 crore or more, have suffered cost overruns amounting to more than Rs 4.65 lakh crore, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. Reasons such as delay in land acquisition, delay in obtaining forest and environment clearances, and lack of infrastructure support and linkages have been cited in the report for overruns in projects.

According to the report, the expenditure incurred on these projects till July 2023 was Rs 15,21,550.38 crore, which was 53.23 per cent of the anticipated cost of the projects.
