Read Write Spell News Today

Local education leaders in Winston-Salem are participating in a panel discussion this week to talk about literacy and equity in the community.

Forty percent of third grade students in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools are proficient in reading. Teachers in the district have undergone two years of professional learning to improve instruction and student outcomes, but there are some barriers to literacy that schools alone can’t break.

Dwindling numbers

Bookmarks, the group behind the annual book festival, plans to use literature to fuel a community-wide initiative against racism.
