A Fort Collins woman is the first to be sentenced in a fentanyl death case since the Colorado legislature created the felony charge in 2022.

Fort Collins Police Services arrested Branco Sept. 7 of 2022 in connection to the overdose death of Kara Gorman, who was found unresponsive by her boyfriend. According to court records, the Branco and Gorman — who was born in Kansas but had recently moved to Northern Colorado — were in communication by text about purchasing “blues,” a code word for fentanyl, only hours before Gorman was found. FCPS was unable to find any other source for the fatal dose of fentanyl.

Andrea Branco, the first person to be charged under Colorado’s 2022 “fentanyl accountability” law, accepted a plea agreement at a Thursday hearing in 8th Judicial District Court.

Cellphone records connected the suspect Samuel Strait to the teen's death, according to an arrest affidavit from the Loveland Police Department.
