to stop this law right now from going into effect. we heard signs of that in the attorney general's statement. he said women right now are effectively precluded from getting abortions because of the chilling effect of the law and the like this reminds me of the exercise we did in 2010 when arizona enacted sb-1070, serious restrictions on immigration. we carefully studied it and reached almost the same kind of lawsuit as here. it's about the federal government's own unique rights in this area. those two things together are a very compelling case. i do expect this lawsuit to go forward and be bad news for texas until the supreme court hears it. katie benner, you know this garland justice department. they move deliberately and is oftentimes opaque to people outside of your beat. tell me your understanding of what's going on behind the

about that day? >> again, nausea worthy. it's despicable. and it's really cynical because paul uses this to fund raise. and i think that's, actually, probably, one of the most sickening qualities is that, not only is this something that is delusional and it's criminal. if his involvement is with whatever reports that i've seen and read. that's true, then he is absolutely a part of organizing this insurrection and should be held criminally accountable for it. but he uses that beyond that, pamela, to fund raise and i find that even more despicable and disgusting. >> i mean, you would -- you could call that shameless. is that a quality that you saw in your brother, growing up? >> no, but i've certainly seen it since he started running for office in 2010. to start your campaign work aligning yourself with joe arpaio and s.b. 1070.

here? >> by the way, it's not just donald trump. the whole republican party. they've been using this theme to prop up their voters. before donald trump it was jan brewer here in arizona with sb-1070. i've seen it in emails and solicitations from the republican party for many years describing invasion from the south. so the president is the problem, but the whole republican brand is also the problem. and they need to atone for that. rhetoric that has caused this type of environment. coming up for a vote in the senate. is the grim reaper of socialism preventing it. it includes two bills. what's your message to the senate majority leader? do you expect something now to change him to actually be willing to -- whether it's

happen with voters. we cannot forget that arizona is the home sb 1070, the most stringent law after governor pete wilson in california. so this has created a whole generation of young people who can vote. they are the children of immigrants who because they have the -- they can still have birthright citizenship in this country, that they are not able to vote. and that kind of activism i think that this is one of the states where i don't think that we talk enough about latino and latina voters and how they are switching the politic on the ground in a assisrizona. >> and we'll be coming back here in a hospital. joy reid will be hosting special election from florida today as democrats pour in everything that they can to upper in the state's first african-american governor in that state. an up next, what women want.

pragmatic, trying to find common ground how to deal with the national guard issue and some would say political pressure to pull back from that and move another direction and keep staying far to the left as they have been in california as far as immigration. do you think that is an accurate summation? >> the government cannot do that to federal law. you can look at the obama administration when they decided to sue the state of arizona. the state of arizona was frustrated with federal immigration laws because they believe there wasn't enough enforcement so they decided to enact sb 1070, arizona absolution to increase immigration enforcement. they ruled if you look back at justice kennedy who wrote the majority opinion out of that case, and understandable frustration with immigration

legislature passed sp 1070, basically making local police departments part of the immigration enforcement system in the state of arizona, he very vigorously and enthusiastically jumped in and maintained his police department's posture even after sb 1070 was shot down by the supreme court. he was a man who was running his own world and in an arizona where the fraction of the population that is represented by latinos grows with every census, this is a state that is uncomfortable with the fact that it's going to be some day a majority/minority state once again and the police were pretty tough. >> now, i understand from reports i believe in this morning's "washington post" that the president had even engaged in conversation with attorney general sessions on trying to

phoenix tuesday night. and there against his standard backdrop of elderly white conservatives and a token black supporter, he again tried to justify his both sides response to the charlottesville tragedy. and teased his now realized pardon of former sheriff joe arpaio. earlier that day in nearby tucson, a federal appeals court judge ruled that a 2010 state law that shuttered a high school mexican american studies program was racially discriminatory. the law enacted the same year as the state's controversial sb 1070 immigration law prohibited courses that promote perceived racial resentment or allegiance to specific ethnic groups. at least that was the sales

laura coat, is that he is not following the rule of law. i is shou he should have waited until he was sentenced. that he should have served that and then a pardon. >> caller: i think that's a significant, i'll say liberally interpreted. there may be a tradition out there to wait until theson tense would be delivered, but i don't think there is for anybody to serve their sentence. i saw this coming as a political persecution. i now judge arpaio. i've gone down and looked at the operation. he was functioning within the law and had a 287-g program that authorized him to enforce immigration law and was operating under the sb-1070 law. they changed the rules on judge arpaio. i remember him saying at the time, i said i'll help you. he said i don't need your help. i don't need the federal

are used to, you know, immigration or immigration issues. as a matter of fact, our latest poll here in arizona shows that the border wall in arizona where we've been talking about the border wall for years is quite unpopular. and is not being supported by the general public here in arizona. so i think what we should really focus on is whether this is good law enforcement. it's not good law enforcement that casts such a wide net. all you're going to do is create a system where people are hiding from i.c.e. and from the police instead of working with the police to get rid of these dangerous criminals that are in the neighborhoods. and that's what happened after sb 1070. we had whole neighborhoods where nobody would call the police and unfortunately we had incidents where there was high levels of rape, molestation and nobody speaking to the police officers because they were afraid of deportation. we can't have that. anybody that understands immigration, understands this is not the way to go. congress immigration reform is the best way to do this and working with the community to identify who the true criminals are. in these areas.
