Courtney Donovan Smith isn’t the kind of person you’d expect to have dirt under his fingernails.
Yet between 2011 and 2018, Smith — who’s both a businessman and a political commentator — nurtured and enjoyed a rooftop garden that covered more than 200 square meters.
Well known in Taichung circles as co-publisher of Compass, a bilingual city guide, and a frequent contributor to ICRT’s news programs, Smith started the garden soon after he moved in to a two-floor apartment in the city’s Situn District (西屯).

The Taichung District Court has approved a detainment order for a female nurse working at a postpartum nursing center in the city’s Situn District (西屯) for allegedly injuring a 28-day-old boy.
The 37-year-old defendant, surnamed Tseng (曾), has been dismissed from her job, the center said, adding that it would take full responsibility if it is found complicit.
While Tseng, who had been working at the center for four years, has not sworn an affidavit on the incident, she reportedly denied abusing the infant, saying that her “improper actions” were because she was too tired due to excessive work.

Taipei, Feb. 9 (CNA) Taichung's new mass rapid transit (MRT) system, which suspended operations due to a major malfunction during trial runs in November last year, is undergoing a series of crucial tests in order to resume service, its operators said Tuesday.
Taichung Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (TMRTC) said all 18 trains have replaced broken components and are being subjected to a series of tests to ensure the system is stable.
The MRT system's Green Line, which started trial runs on Nov. 16, reported a major malfunction caused by the improper assembly of anchors for couplings that connect the carriages, leading to a suspension of service.
