Study Isis News Today

Photos of his face and whatnot, and that was one of the ways they were able to confirm it. in his case also, they had dna, of course. ive actually never heard whether they have dna samples on baghdadi. but when you have someone like that, such a high-profile terror leader, like baghdadi or osama bin lauden, the u.s. init tell jensen will usually try to have something on hand if, in fact, they have an opportunity to kill or capture the person, they can verify the identity. >> now, courtney, baghd...

Repaired. this is the tribal arab region, the sunni conservative heartland of the middle east where isis tends to thrive. so for me whats extraordinary about this allegation or this news reporting is that baghdadi has gone to a place that frankly hes not all that welcome in. the place that the u.s. has announced it was going to withdraw from until donald trump rather precipitously said, no, were doing an about face, were actually going to come back into syria to guard the oil wells, this is the ...

There is a huge protest movement against the central government, and particularly against iranian-backed militia groups in iraq. isis has the most potential to reorganize and to resurge in a place like iraq rather than syria especially now the americans have decided to come back into syria. its very strange. you know, i dont doubt that the reporting has been credible. i dont doubt that, in fact, baghdadi was, indeed, targeted there based on credible intelligence. but frankly, as somebody who has...

Camps while he left. he did not stay and fight to the last bullet. he was not on the ground in their final isis root out, the final isis hold out, a little town of bagus. there were exit fighters who as they were being captured, as they were being brought away to detention camps, separated from their families, were put into other detention facilities. we personally heard -- i personally heard from isis members and supporters that they were angry with the leadership, that they were angry with bag...

This is idlib province. idlib province, the most predominant jihadist faction of al qaeda. whats important to keep in mind here is al qaeda broke from the organization that has become isis in around 2013, 2014. so baghdadi does not have many friends in idlib. now, its true there might be some isis sleeper cells or isis factions that have infiltrated into idlib in recent months or years. but this is not hospitable at the ra terrain for him. the most hospitable terrain is where the u.s. announced ...

Raid and this mission, was actually killed. and what, if anything, they were able to gather, any kind of intelligence or evidence that, in fact, it was him. so were still getting a lot of -- we have more questions than answers at this point. whats also unclear, you know, weve obviously been asking about baghdadi, his whereabouts, whether he was alive or dead for years now. in recent days ive actually been surprised by just how u.s. officials have talked about his role in isis. obviously hes a fi...

If al qaeda, as is widely known, is the predominant jihadist organization in idlib, is still in control of that province -- which i am not under any, you know, indication that its not -- its very strange that baghdadi would go to that area of northwestern syria. again, the area that isis has thrived in has been jazeera, which is the eastern, mostly central and southeastern syria. this is the area that is the gateway, the border lands between syria and iraq. remember, isis -- it came into its own...

On sunday, and nbc news has now confirmed the likely topic of those remarks. a u.s. military operation that targeted isis leader abu back ar al baghdadi. we are told a u.s. special ops mission targeted him overnight. the mission included helicopter, jets and u.s. drones. the u.s. received actionable intelligence from u.s. intelligence sources in recent days. and after confirming it, the mission began late yesterday local time around midnight. the u.s. fired from the air and then landed and gathe...

Some sense of chaos or bit of vacuum of -- of whats happening with the organization. even if hes not actually out there telling his fighters where to go and whatnot, the fact that he is -- he may be dead here will impact the organization. in its morale, if nothing else. >> so, courtney, what do we know about the strength of isis overall? trump had suggested that the organization has been defeated. >> reporter: so, thats not true. i mean, its not true at all. in fact, im here in iraq where the is...

So it could be that he was, he was there on his way to turkey, coming out of turkey, looking to hide, to get out of the country. as you were just talking about, idlib is a place where a lot of hard liners, a lot of isis members have been falling back to. he would have been falling back to a group of his core supporters right there as the islamic movement, the hardline islamists from the al qaeda factions and isis had really nowhere to go after they were defeated in this -- defeated in their so-c...
