Solar farm regulations one step closer

A public hearing regarding local solar farm regulations has been set for Monday, July 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the Tangipahoa Parish Government Building in Amite. With a 9-1 vote, Tangipahoa Parish Council members agreed Monday to introduce the development regulation committee’s proposed guidelines that, if adopted at the next meeting, will have to be followed to develop local property into commercial solar farms. Councilwoman Kim Coates thanked everyone for the public input the committee received, as well as industry representatives for their participation. Councilman Carlo Bruno cast the sole no vote. He commended everyone for the work they put into this but stressed that there are matters in it that he does not agree with.

Solar farming divides neighbors

The prospective development of farming solar energy off highways 16 and 445 has divided neighbors in rural Tangipahoa. Melinda Casanova, one of several landowners within the project’s region, admitted during Wednesday’s development regulations committee meeting that she feels discriminated against and invisible in this process. “We all have had this land in our family for years,” she said. “We are good stewards of the land and nature. We have always cared for our land with great pride. With this overwhelming response from my community and the parish government office, that only validates we are good caregivers of our property.” She stressed the land does not belong to the solar panel company, the parish government, the state or her neighbors. It belongs to her and the other landowners.
