Among the nine boys soccer teams in the Eastern Maumee Bay community, there were no league champions, but there were three teams that finished as runner-up, narrowly missing on a title.

After leading Genoa to a Northern Buckeye Conference championship, Genoa junior forward Aiden Hemmert is the Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press Player of the Year.

The Lake and Oak Harbor boys soccer teams were not league champions, but they came as close as a team can get, finishing as runners-up in their respective leagues. A break in one or two league games could have made the difference for either team.

Last year, Genoa senior Corey Welsh was a first team Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press boys soccer selection and his younger brother, Tyler, was a first team All-Press goalkeeper.

There was never any doubt that Genoa graduate Dillon Sims would play collegiate soccer — it was just a matter of where. Sims is heading to Angola, Indiana to play NCAA Division III soccer at Trine University. It wasn’t entirely about soccer, however.

Genoa soccer players Aiden Hemmert, Ethan Wilson, Griffin Meyer and Evan Hoeft have been around the game for a long time.

At 14-0, Genoa boys soccer is unranked in state polls, but coach Tim Memmer knows better than to think anyone does not know how good the Comets are. “We’re not under the radar at this point,” Memmer said.
