The United Nations Interagency Task Force on Religion and Sustainable Development

The UN Interagency Task Force on Religion and Sustainable Development (UN IATF-R) was established in 2010, at the behest of eight UN principals, as a platform for knowledge exchange and management, capacity building, system-wide guidance and oversight regarding engagement with faith-based/-inspired civil society actors. Since 2010, the UNIATF has established a momentum and modality of collaboration with a diverse range of faith-based/-inspired civil society partners. The UN IATF-R has grown considerably over the past years and currently brings together 27 UN entities from across the system who meet on a regular basis, and co-organize joint advocacy and capacity-building activities. It is encouraging to note the increased interest among UN-System partners in faith-related engagement, including in talking on coordination and leadership roles in support of the UN-System’s work in engaging faith-based organizations and networks. The 2020 Annual Report provides an overview of the engageme

Global Peatlands Assessment: The State of the World s Peatlands | UNEP

Peatlands are unique and rare ecosystems that, despite only covering around 3-4% of the planet’s land surface, they contain up to one-third of the world’s soil carbon, which is twice the amount of carbon as found in the world’s forests. Keeping this carbon locked away is absolutely critical to achieving global climate goals. However, about 12% of current peatlands have been drained and degraded, contributing to 4% of annual global human-induced emissions. The Global Peatlands Assessment (GPA) aims to provide a better understanding of what peatlands are, where they are found, what condition they are in and how actions can be taken to protect, restore and sustainably manage them. It also provides a valuable baseline for improvement against future assessments and paves the way for the development of a comprehensive global peatland inventory, as called for in the UNEA4/16 Resolution. It includes an updated Global Peatland Map, Regional Peatland Extent Maps, and other Hotspot Maps

Sustainable Food Cold Chains: Opportunities, Challenges and the Way Forward

An estimated 14 percent of the total food produced for human consumption is lost, while 17 per cent is wasted. This is enough to feed around 1 billion people in a world where currently 811 million people are hungry and 3 billion cannot afford a healthy diet. The lack of effective refrigeration is a leading contributor to this challenge, resulting in the loss of 12 percent of total food production, in 2017. Moreover, the food cold chain is responsible for 4 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, including from cold chain technologies and food loss and waste due to lack of refrigeration. This report explores how food cold chain development can become more sustainable and makes a series of important recommendations. These include governments and other cold chain stakeholders collaborating to adopt a systems approach and develop National Cooling Action Plans, backing plans with financing and targets, implementing and enforcing ambitious minimum efficiency standards. 2022 Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction

The Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction (Buildings-GSR) is a flagship publication of the UNEP-hosted Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC). The Buildings-GSR provides an annual snapshot of the progress of the buildings and construction sector on a global scale and reviews the status of policies, finance, technologies, and solutions to monitor whether the sector is aligned with the Paris Agreement goals. It also provides stakeholders with evidence to persuade policymakers and the overall buildings and construction community to take action. What is new in the 2022 Buildings-GSR?  Buildings and construction: disruptions and challenges facing the buildings sector in 2022  Global Building Carbon Tracker: Are we on track towards the Paris Agreement Goals? An Eye on Methane: International Methane Emissions Observatory 2022 Report

An Eye on Methane: International Methane Emissions Observatory 2022 Report delves into the progress made to achieve deep reduction of methane emissions, starting with the fossil fuel sector. We need a strong basis for action grounded on improved emissions data to close the emissions gap and reduce warming in the short term.   The International Methane Emissions Observatory's second annual report seeks to provide decision makers with a framework of action to track and monitor methane emissions to plan targeted and ambitious action for their mitigation.
