Assessment Report on Sustainable Use of Wild Species

Billions of people, in developed and developing nations, benefit daily from the use of wild species for food, energy, materials, medicine, recreation, inspiration and many other vital contributions to human well-being. The accelerating global biodiversity crisis, with a million species of plants and animals facing extinction, threatens these contributions to people. The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Assessment Report on Sustainable Use of Wild Species offers insights, analysis and tools to establish more sustainable use of wild species of plants, animals, fungi and algae around the world. Sustainable use is when biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are maintained while contributing to human well-being.   The new report is the result of four years of work by 85 leading experts from the natural and social sciences, and holders of indigenous and local knowledge, as well as 200 contributing authors, drawing on more than 6

Global impact of the war in Ukraine: Billions of people face the greatest cost-of-living crisis in a generation

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres launched the second brief of the Global Crisis Response Group (GCRG) on the global implications of the war in Ukraine on the cost of living on 8 June 2022. The war in Ukraine has led to a cost-of-living crisis. An estimated 1.6 billion people are exposed to at least one dimension of the crisis. About 1.2 billion of them live in ‘perfect-storm’ countries severely vulnerable to all three dimensions – food, energy and finance. The GCRG will help decision-makers to mobilize solutions and develop strategies to help countries address the interlinked crisis with food, energy and finance. The first brief on the global impact of war in Ukraine on food, energy and finance was launched on 13 April 2022.

Case Study Bangkok (Thailand): Using Technologies to Reduce Food Waste

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, solid waste in Bangkok has increased continuously, reaching its peak in 2018 where the city generated 3.91 million tons or 10,705 tons per day. Food waste plays an important part, comprising of 52.96% of all solid waste in the same year. As part of the “Build Back Better: Using Green and Digital Technologies to Reduce Food Waste at Consumer Level”, the Bangkok Case Study, with the support of Thailand Environment Institute (TEI), analyses the city’s food waste situation, identifying the various sources and mapping relevant stakeholders; explores the policies that have been created to tackle the issue; conducts an in-depth analysis on the use of technology for food waste management, pinpointing the opportunities and challenges; and lastly, offers seven key policy recommendations.

Case Study Bogotá (Colombia): Using Technologies to Reduce Food Waste

In Colombia, 9.7 million tons of food are lost and wasted each year, enough to feed the population of Bogota – the country’s capital and largest city – in the same period. Out of every 3 tons of food produced in the country, 1 ton ends up in the garbage. The annual cost of these losses and wastes amounts to $45.37 million Colombian pesos. There have been efforts to promote the use of digital technology to tackle the food waste problem, but however, entrepreneurs still face different barriers such as o limited technical capacities and lack of investment. Therefore, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), with the support of the University of Los Andes and within the context of the Green Tech Project, launched #SinDesperdicio Bogota, a programme focused on strengthening the entrepreneurial skills of a group of nine start-ups.
