grammy s. why from time-to-time the president has to give a speech. good morning, i m melissa harris-perry. tuesday, america will tune in to their televisions in breathless anticipation of the sweeping address delivered in the u.s. capital in this must have pomp and circumstance. president obama s first state of the union since his re-election will be ambitious in his vision and no doubt punctuated. maybe some of us watching at home will be applauding. if you are near a television, the state of the union will be unavoidable. the networks and cable news will, as always, broadcast wall-to-wall coverage of the speech. the attention given to the
people here in washington. we re expecting between 600,000 and 800,000. while that pales in comparison to the nearly 200 million we saw four years ago. hotels are certainly filling up, and security is a big concern. it s a big issue. the secret service has 100 stations planted around the city, at least so far. 42 different agencies involved in that, keeping in mind they have to secure not only the national mall where everyone will gather for the ceremony, but the entire parade route to the white house, across from the white house, the viewing stand, which is already being set up. this is certainly a massive undertaking. the white house tells us that president obama is working on that speech. analysts say he d be smart not to make it a partisan speech, sort of keep it down the middle. all right. traci potts in washington, thank you. msnbc will have wall-to-wall
jim norton gave me a good example. it was a perfect example when a fan runs out on to the field, these sports coverage, they don t follow him on the field. i was feeling left out. it seems frivolous, but it is a perfect example. media sensors themselves and why not, andy, in a case like this. i am still not sure what exactly you want. do you want no coverage of this event? we cover terrorist events . look at what we have seen since friday. it has been wall to wall coverage. hour after hour after hour. i think it is that excessive coverage that could have an affect on other emotionally disturbed people to say to them, you can get four days of being the center of attention of the entire united states. that s bad. let me tell you this. if you stop coverage in the first four days, then you are
romney in ohio. if, you know, like i said you don t know the impact of the storm. you ve don t know, every poll says something different. so you don t know how it will play out. all eyes really ohio and florida. but then democrats could be losing ground, in what they thought were solid blue states including michigan and minnesota now. you would think though the folks in florida, with all of the hurricanes that they get, they want someone they can respond vigorously and robustly to this type of tragedy. and with chris christie, again, vouching for president obama, i would think that would have some sort of effect on perhaps florida voters. you know what else, i hope i haven t, mentioned new orleans on the show this week. i think when the way you see politicians and your local leaders, even media, wall to wall coverage. to me all of this living through this for a second time is proof of how katrina changed the nation s psychology when it comes to storms. oh, yes. how many lessons
